Forest fires in Cantabria (Northern Spain): incidence depending on weather, land uses and geographical areas

SUMMARY

Forest fires are very frequent in Cantabria (Northern Spain). They affect all types of vegetation cover producing large environmental damages and situations of risk for all the concerned people. Nevertheless, their temporal distribution seems not to be related with the main bioclimatic cycles but the combination of particular meteorological situations and the calendar of traditional rural practices.

The main objective of this project is to establish accurately the most favourable meteorological situations for forest fires in the different areas of the region taking into account its climatic diversity, the different land uses and vegetation covers and the calendar of agrarian practices.
