The research group STUDY AND MANAGEMENT OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT (GIMENA) from the University of Cantabria welcomes you to its website. Here you will find information on its main lines of research, projects, publications and other activities as well as links to download some of these materials.
GIMENA
group focuses its work on
the complex set of
interactions that occur between the processes
that shape the natural
environment and the various types of
human activities.
Although
included in the field of
Social Sciences, the
group is developing a cross-cutting
work that exceeds the limits
of
classical academic
disciplines
and
that is
performed from
both
fundamental
and applied
aproaches.
The group
has a long history in both
basic
(climatology,
natural hazards, forest fires,
environmental issues)
and applied research (territorial
planning,
cooperation for development)
endorsed by
the participation in
around fifty R&D
national and international
projets.

RESEARCH RESOURCES
The group is integrated in the Department of Geography, Urban Studies and Land Planning of the University of Cantabria. It uses its own resources or those belonging to the Department or University. Among others, we can highlight the following:
PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY LABORATORY
with the
appropriate equipment to cover the
common needs of the major
fields of Physical
Geography:
geomorphology, sedimentology, biogeography,
soils, meteorology and
climatology.
MAPPING AND COMPUTER
LABORATORY
with the equipment needed to cover the standard job requirements in
different fields of geography, data processing and production of
documents
(mapping, GIS,
image processing and
exploitation of climatic and
hydrological data, etc.).
MAP LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND ORTOPHOTOS managed by the Department of Geography, Urban Studies and Land Planning. The available collection covers the entire Northern Peninsula and is the most comprehensive in the region.
