Synoptic characterization of the secular atmospheric circulation over the Iberian Peninsula

SUMMARY

Climatic extreme events, with intense impacts on environment and socioeconomic activities, may be changing their time patterns and intensity as consequence of the anthropogenic climatic change. The main purpose of this project is to explore changes in the climatic extreme events over the lberian Peninsula, explain these changes in the context of the natural climate variability, and look for relationships with various forcing factors. lt will be develop a daily data base that enlarge the spatio-temporal coverage of the existing data bases (SDATS, SDAPS,EMSLP), which, in many occasions, have records back to 1850. From the improvement of these data bases (filling gaps, extending back in time, completing metadata information) the project will be devoted to detect and characterize the long time changes (1850-2007) in the behaviour of extreme climate in the lberian Peninsula, and to analyze the relationships with different dynamic situations weather patterns as well as various low frequency patterns NAO, ENSO, SST.
