forestales y gestión del fuego en Cantabria. PhD thesis, Universidad

ABSTRACT Cantabria is one of the Spanish regions worst touched by wildfires and, at the regional level, these events cause the greatest concern to forest Administration. However, despite the efforts undertaken, the statistics show that the situation, far from improving, is increasingly worrying. In order to assess the successes and deficiencies of the management of fire in Cantabria, this thesis explores the knowledge of regional fires combining different approaches - evidence of fire in the region throughout history; evolution of fire management in Spain, and in Cantabria, since the implementation of Forest Fire Statistics until today and assessment of its effects; regional data analysis and definition of the characteristics and peculiarities of fires in Cantabria from both spatial and temporal points of view and, finally, identification of possible fire variants depending on the type of vegetation cover burned by them and on their size-.
